DESCRIPTION

OVERVIEW

Based on a series of human interest newspaper articles by Pulitzer Prize-winner Lane DeGregory of The Tampa Bay Times, WIND PHONE PLAY (working title) is a vignette play set in a Florida town. Centered around a gazebo with a wind phone – a Japanese art installation/ritual where a disconnected rotary phone allows individuals to connect with loved ones who have died – the play watches and explores a series of characters’ interactions not only with the object, but the idea the object represents. Attracting believers and skeptics, beauty pageant queens, fast food employees, kids with big dreams, adults with big mortgages, a woman who dresses up as The Statue of Liberty to work at a tax firm, born and bred Floridians, and midwesterners itching to see the ocean; all of these people cross paths with the wind phone with a singular goal in mind: to achieve understanding. WIND PHONE PLAY (working title), written by Lindsey Walko and directed by Tucker DeGregory, explores the intangibility of grief, the humor and wonder of the mundane, and the vitality found only in real life miracles. The production team of Columbia University School of the Arts MFA Theatre students is seeking designers to bring the play to life for its premiere production, which will run at Columbia University’s Schapiro Theatre October 10-11, 2025. To apply, please complete the Google Form linked at the bottom of this listing.

[MICHAEL HOBBS] (Male-identifying, 12) Michael Hobbs is the smarter-than-average 12-year-old son of Walter and Emily. He quickly befriends his new adult brother, Buddy, and does everything he can to make sure Buddy becomes a permanent part of the family. A solid singer. Moves well, tap dance skills a bonus. Unchanged voice up to a E.

[SANTA] (Male-identifying, 50s – 60s) Jolly, warm, funny, good singing voice. Down to earth, blue-collar kind of Santa. Loveable with an acerbic wit.
